After the 2007 National Championships the WRAN changed to a new level system. After the membership meeting of 2008 Dawra followed WRAN and adopted the same level system.
Every competitor in a Dawra competition competes in one of the following levels or classes.
L5, L4, L3, L2, L1.
Level 5 ( L5) is the easiest and lowest level and L1 is the highest and toughest.
Through success and improvement a competitor can move up a level and likewise down a level.
The minimum age for competitors in the Lead Rein class is 7 years and for the other disciplines 10 years. In both cases that is the age on the 1st of January of that year.
For all in hand classes horses must be 2 years or older.
For all ridden classes horses are required to be 4 years or older.
Stallions may only compete with adult competitors in classes L2 and L1, stallions may not compete in other classes.
Class level 5
This is the entry level for the western sport. This class is for western beginners on either their own horse or a riding school horse. The competitors learn the basic procedures for western competitions.
Level 5 offers classes in leading rein, pleasure, trail, horsemanship, showmanship at halter and in hand trial.
Class level 4
At this level the most basic aspects of the western competitions are given more form. The horses and riders are expected to show the basic paces with the emphasis being placed more on technique than the speed of performing the various figures and transitions.
Level 4 offers the following classes, pleasure, trail, horsemanship, showmanship at halter, hunter under saddle and in hand trail.
Class level 3
This level is intended for the rider who has achieved a competency in the basic aspects of western riding. In this level attention is turning towards faster completion of manoeuvres and figures, combinations of figures and combinations of paces and figures.
Level 3 offers the following classes, pleasure, trail, horsemanship, showmanship at halter, in hand trail, hunter under saddle and reining.
Class level 2
A level aimed at the experienced western rider who is able to demonstrate technically correct figures and manoeuvres at a much faster pace. At this level more complicated manoeuvres are required although slightly less close together than is later expected in L1 and in L2 and more space is available for the completion of the figures and manoeuvres.
Level 2 offers classes in pleasure, trail, horsemanship, showmanship at halter, in hand trail, hunter under saddle, versatile horse, western riding and reining.
Class level 1
This level is intended for the most experienced and professional western riders. At this level the expectation is of fast and technically correct manoeuvres. This class can ask for the most complicated combination of manoeuvres.
Level 1 offers classes in pleasure, trail, horsemanship, showmanship at halter, in hand trail, hunter under saddle, versatile horse, western riding and reining.
Progression through the levels
Through participation and results riders gain points which are calculated each year at the end of the competitive season, ie after the National championships.
Class L5 / L4 / L3.
Competitors who have not earned one point through the season will have 5 points deducted from their total balance of points.
In the case of a balance below 0, the balance will be set at 0.
Competitors with a balance of over 75 points progress to the next level L4 / L3 / L2
Competitors with a balance over 25 points may decide for themselves whether to progress to the next level.
Results attained at Wran competitions are used for the class classification are included here.
L2
Competitors who have not earned any points during the competitive season will have 5 points deducted from their balance.
Competitors with a balance of over 75 points will be promoted to L1.
Competitors with a balance of 25 points may decide whether to progress to L1 or remain in L2.
Competitors with a negative balance ie less than 0 points will be regress or be demoted to Level 3 entering level 3 with a balance of 10 points.
Results attained at Wran competitions are included.
L1
Competitors who have not earned any points during the competitive season will have 5 points deducted from their balance.
Competitors with a negative balance ie less than 0 points will be regress or be demoted to Level 2 entering level 2 with a balance of 10 points.
